Odisha Assembly adjourned thrice till 3 pm over poor law and order

Bhubaneswar: The State Assembly was adjourned thrice till 3 pm on Monday following uproarious scenes and pandemonium by opposition BJP and Congress members over deteriorating law and order situation in the State.

As the House met for the day at 10.30 am, Leader of Opposition Pradipta Kumar Naik stood at his chair and urged Speaker Surjya Narayan Patro to suspend the Question Hour and allow members to hold discussions on the current status of law and order situation in the State.

He alleged that the law and order in the State is fast deteriorating as three persons were hacked to death by miscreants at Pattnaikiya Chhak on Sunday. He also raised the issue involving incident of firing on a businessman in Kendrapara on Saturday.

As Speaker Surjya Narayan Patro did not allow, BJP members rushed into the well of the House and shouted slogans.

Unable to run proceedings, the Speaker adjourned the House at 10.33 for 10 minutes and then till 11.30 am.

As the House again met at 11.30 am, the BJP and Congress members continued with their agitation demanding reply from Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, who also holds the Home portfolio over the issue.

Despite the Speaker ruled that the Minister of State (Home) will make a statement, but the opposition MLAs insisted on Chief Minister’s reply.

As the opposition MLAs did not relent, Speaker suspended the proceedings at 11.57 am till 3 pm.

“BJP members want a statement from Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on law and order situation in the State. The Government must ensure that incidents such as triple murder in Puri should not recur,” said Leader of Opposition Pradipta Naik outside the House.
