BJD opposes non-confidence motion against rival BJP-led NDA Govt in Lok Sabha

Bhubaneswar, August 8: Odisha’s ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Tuesday opposed the no-confidence motion brought by the Congress-led opposition bloc.

The regional party headed by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik also expressed gratitude for the Centre’s “support” to the State.

Participating in the debate on the no-confidence motion, BJD’s Puri Lok Sabha member Pinaki Misra said his party opposed the no-confidence motion as the Narendra Modi Government had done many things for Odisha.

The lawmaker questioned the logic behind the move and said the Congress party was “adept at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.”

“I cannot support a no-confidence motion against the central government today, even though we are against the BJP as a political party. I am grateful for the many things that the Union government has done for Odisha which is why, in any case, I am unable to persuade myself on behalf of my party and leader to support a no-confidence motion today which has been brought by the Congress party.”

The opposition bloc Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) has brought the no-confidence motion to force a statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Manipur violence.

“I have always believed that the Congress party is adept at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. They are also very adept at cutting their nose to spite their face,” the BJD MP said.

“I have always believed that the Congress party is adept at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. They are also very adept at cutting their nose to spite their face. They know that every time the PM has got up to speak on the Floor of this House, he has pushed the Congress party through the shredder…This defies common sense, logic, and political sense. People of this country will decide if the PM has chosen not to speak whether that was right or wrong. You have to take the case to the people…” said Misra.

On Monday, the BJD had supported the National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023 in Rajya Sabha.

BJD president and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has always maintained that his party maintains equidistance from the BJP and Congress. However, in reality, the BJD has always extended crucial support to the NDA Government in passing bills in Rajya Sabha where the ruling party does not have a majority of its own.
