Bhubaneswar, August 17: Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday released the primers on Kuwi and Desia languages and said that learning in the mother tongue is important.

“When one learns, speaks and thinks in one’s mother tongue, there’s a clarity of thought which can be used later. Whereas you can confuse a child if you were to have a different language or environment than what one is expected to read or speak. That’s why learning in the mother tongue is important,” said Sitharaman.

She said that the step to introduce primers in local languages and dialects is a generational one and will also further enrich Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Ek Bharat Shrestha Bharat’.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also graced the occasion.

“New Education Policy 2020 is a very progressive policy. It’s a result of different people putting their minds together & extensive consultations,” said Minister Sitharaman.

Maintaining that NEP is a flexible policy, Sitharaman said, “It’s not something that the Centre decides and imposes on all the states. It’s a broad framework and the states are left to adapt it according to their requirements.”

The Finance Minister also unveiled a Special Cover – a collaborative venture involving the Central University of Odisha, Koraput, the Department of Posts, and NCERT.
