Supreme Court collegium recommends appointment of Justice BR Sarangi as new CJ of Jharkhand High Court

Bhubaneswar, December 28: The Supreme Court collegium headed by Chief Justice of India Dr DY Chandrachud has recommended name of Justice Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi, Acting Chief Justice of Orissa High Court as the Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court.

The Collegium’s Statement read,”As regards his contribution to the judiciary by way of disposal of cases, during his tenure of more than 10 years as a Judge as a Judge of High Court, he has authored more than 1056 reported judgments. He has acquired considerable experience in dispensing justice in the High Court. While considering his name, the Collegium has taken into consideration the fact that after the retirement of Mr Justice Sanjaya Kumar Mishra, there would be no representation of the High Court of Orissa among the Chief Justices of the High Courts.”

Justice Sarangi is now serving as the Acting Chief Justice after the superannuation of Justice Subhasis Talapatra.

Born on July 20, 1962 in Pantikharisasan of Odagaon in Nayagarh district, Justice Sarangi joined the Bar in December, 1985 having regular practice in the High Court of Orissa and Supreme Court.

He has conducted cases specially in civil, criminal, constitutional, revenue, tax, labour, service, mining, education, electricity, insurance, banking, telephone, elections etc. He was an advocate, first and last, who fought all cases, big or small with equal zeal and vigour.

He was elevated to the nench and sworn as a Permanent Judge of Orissa High Court on June 20, 2013.
