Jagdeep Dhankar elected 16th Vice President of India

New Delhi, August 6: Former West Bengal Governor and BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate Jagdeep Dhankar became the new Vice President for India on Saturday.

Dhankhar secured 528 votes over Opposition candidate Margaret Alva’s 182. As many as 725 MPs cast their ballot in the Vice-Presidential poll, which is 92.94 per cent of total votes. Total 15 votes declared invalid. Dhankhar defeated Opposition Candidate Margaret Alva by 356 votes.

The Vice President-elect will take oath as the 16th Vice President of India on August 11 as the term of the incumbent Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu ends on August 10.

A lawyer by profession, Dhankhar joined politics in 1989. He became the Governor of West Bengal in July 2019 and has made headlines since then over his tumultuous relations with the Mamata Banerjee Government.

He tendered his resignation as the Governor of West Bengal on July 17.
