700kg Kankrej Bull charms visitors at Odisha Matsya Prani Samabesh

Bhubaneswar, January 22: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Wednesday inaugurated three-day Matsya-Pranee Samavesh 2026 (Fisheries and Livestock Conference) at the Janata Maidan here at Janata Maidan. People from different parts of the country are participating in the fair with varieties of fish and cattle.

Kankrej, a bull that weighs 700kg is the centre of attraction in the fair this year.

The Kankrej Bull, globally admired for its legendary “Sawai Chal” – the king’s gait, stands as one of India’s most majestic and powerful indigenous cattle breeds. Known for its proud walk, commanding posture, and calm yet dominant temperament, the Kankrej bull has long been regarded as a symbol of royalty, strength, and endurance.

This five-year-old Kankrej bull showcases the breed’s classic features, including its distinctive lyre-shaped horns, strong skeletal structure, and well-balanced physique. With a height of 5 feet and a solid body weight of approximately 700 kilograms, the bull reflects excellent growth, robustness, and functional efficiency.

Renowned as a dual-purpose breed, the Kankrej is valued not only for its superior draught power but also for its strong genetic contribution to milk productivity and crossbreeding programs. Its adaptability to harsh climates, resistance to diseases, and long working life make it a preferred choice among progressive farmers and breeders.

To maintain peak health and performance, the bull is managed under a carefully structured nutrition program. Its daily diet includes green gram, oil cakes, broken wheat, concentrated feed, chickpea, rice bran, and sesame bran.
