Odisha told to provide fans, light in police hazats

Bhubaneswar: Acting on a petition filed by lawyer and rights activist Byomakesh
Tripathy, the Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) on Thursday directed the State
Government to ensure provision of fan and light in hazats at all police stations
in the State.

Last year the petitioner
had submitted a petition to the Commission urgingit to direct the Government to
facilitate basic amenities and living conditions in every hazat (male and
female) of each police stations on human consideration, as the person involved
in an alleged crime and put behind the bars is also a human being.
On Thursday the
Commission has directed the Home Department Secretary, Director General of
Police and IG (Modernisation) to make provision of fans and lights in hazats at
all police stations without any further delay and asked them to submit report
of compliance to it within three months.
The matter has been
listed on August 8, 2014 for further orders.
