Bhubnaeswar, Sep 8: The
National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought an action taken report (ATR)
from Inspector General (IG) Prison over the supply of contraband narcotics and
other restricted items in Choudwar Jail within four weeks.
The directions came in
response to a complaint filed by human rights activist Akhand alleging that no action
is being taken by the Government against erring official involved in supplying
these restricted items to the jail.
He alleged in his
petition that on March 22 this year contraband and narcotics, cash, jewellery,
sharp weapons and a huge amount of restricted items were seized from the cells
of UTPs and convicts from the jail during a raid by the Commissionerate police.
But no action is taken against the Jail Superintendent and other erring
officials as they are responsible for these illegal acts in the jail.
Again on June 27 10 kg
Ganja, four boxes of liquor and a mobile were also seized from the jail kitchen.
“Due to availability of
this restricted items the life of the inmates are in danger and any time there
may be bloody fight as the weapons and other dangerous items are available in
the jail. Government is trying to reform the jail system and do good works, so
that prisoners will get into the mainstream of the society. But some criminals
are trying to destroy the jail environment. But Home Department is silent over
the issue and no action is taken against the Jail superintendent. Because he is
responsible as he failed to stop illegal supply of these restricted items to
the jail as the Chief of the institution. It endangers life of prisoners,
waders and other staff in the jail,” alleged Akhand.
