NHRC pouts State on notice over poisonous mid-day meal

Bhubaneswar, October 11: The National Human Rights Commission
(NHRC) has issued notice to the School and Mass Education Secretary over poisonous
mid-day meal (MDM) served to more than 200 children of Dapa UGME School in Kanpada
gram panchayat of Tihidi block in Bhadrak district and sough a report within
four weeks.
Rights campaigner Radhakanta Tripathy moved the apex human
rights panel over the issue seeking justice to the victims.
“The children complained of uneasiness after eating the meal
in which a dead lizard found on August 5at the Dapa UGME School. But the school
authorities did not admitted all the children in hospital. Students namely
Gayatri Das, Bhumika Das, Puja Das, Sambit Das were taken to hospital by their
family members. Therefore, keeping check over the issue is of paramount
importance. The negligence of State authorities amount to serious violation of
human rights of the children,” Radhakanta alleged.
He requested the NHRC to investigate the case and direct the
State to provide detailed report on the above mentioned cases and steps taken
by the Education department to ensure safe and nutritious food in mid-day meal
scheme to the children and to pay compensation to the affected children who are
the victims of mid-day meal so far.
