Bagda, Bhekti seeds ranching in Chilika planned

Bhubaneswar, Aug 25:  The
Chilika Development Authority (CDA) has proposed for ranching of three million
tiger prawn (Bagda) seeds (SPF stock) and about two lakhs of sea bass (Bhekti)
seeds (20-25 mm) by October to boost fisheries in the Chilika Lake.
The tiger prawn and sea bass seeds will be procured from RCGA
hatcheries at Gopalpur-on-sea and Chennai.
It was decided in a meeting of the executive committee of CDA
held recently under the chairmanship of Forest and Environment Secretary Suresh
Chandra Mohapatra. The executive committee also took several important
decisions relating to the development of fisheries.
It was approved to provide financial assistance in form of
soft loan of Rs 10 lakh to each Primary Fishermen Cooperative Society under
Chilika Circle with simple interest of four percent through CFCCS Ltd.,
Balugaon against the fixed deposit amounts.
It was revealed in the meeting that Rs 4 crore from 13th FC
grant and Rs 2 crore from State Plan was granted since 2012 for the purpose and
placed with MD, CFCCS and ARCS Balugaon.
They are providing the finance to concerned PFCS and already
few societies have repaid and got the loans sanctioned second time also. This
is an ongoing successful programme.
The executive committee recommended to the Government for
approval to utilise interest money for financing the activities of the primary
cooperative societies following same guidelines.
It was also proposed that a fishery cooperative inspector
from Directorate of Fisheries may be brought on deputation to CDA to monitor
the successful programme.
It was decided to conduct about 60 awareness meetings in
important fishing villages of Chilika Lake between September this year and
March 2017 with the help of NGOs to campaign responsible fishing in the outer
lead channels between the lake mouth and main water body so as to allow
movement of fish and its juveniles, saline water and sediment from the sea to
Chilika and vice versa.
Patrolling and removal of nets in the demarcated channels
shall be taken up during the period.
