Panagariya calls for empowering people through education

Sep 19: NITI Aayog Vice-Chairman Dr Arvind Panagariya on Monday said true
empowerment of people can be achieved only when their income level goes up. He
suggested that both Union state governments must work in tandem to ensure that
various schemes and programmes aimed economic growth of the people are
implemented in right spirit.
Inaugurating
the three-day Odisha Vikash Conclave here in the city, Dr Panagariya said the
best way to enable people increase their income is to empower them with quality
education.
“There can
be no better way other than imparting quality education to people to empower
them achieve higher growth rate. Once they are empowered, they would afford for
good food, cloth and houses which would contribute to the building of a great
nation,” he said.
“When
economy grows, it generates incomes and directly empower people. Apart from
meeting their food, cloth and shelter, they make good spending in healthcare
and quality education,” he added.
Stating that
Odisha made significant progress in poverty reduction in the last few years and
achieved higher economic growth rate in recent years, Panagariya said this
tempo should be maintained.
Speaking on
the occasion, Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said
in order to empower the people state should think of a sustainable economic
model instead of relief centric model.
“Relief
centric model can bring temporary happiness but it cannot bring out sustainable
development. State should have role of empowerment. It should not have only a
relief mechanism,” he observed.
The Minister
requested the Niti Ayoga VC to hold a similar interface with civil society
representatives in New Delhi for preparing a roadmap of sustainable
development.
Speaking on
the occasion, Odisha Health and Family Welfare Minister Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak
said key challenges must be identified and necessary steps be taken
accordingly.
Presided
over by noted social activist and former Odisha Information Commissioner
Jagadanand, the conclave witnessed a large turnout of civil society
representatives, intellectuals, media persons and people from various other
sectors.
Nalco
chairman and managing director Dr Tapan Chand gave vote of thanks. A set of
recommendations will be submitted both to State and Central Governments with
specific suggestions to augment development process of Odisha after the
three-day deliberations.
