NABARD estimates Rs 66,554-cr credit potential of Odisha for 2017-18

Feb 3: The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has
estimated the credit potential of Odisha at Rs 66,554 crore for the 2017-18
financial year.
“The credit projection for Odisha for 2017-18 stands at Rs 66,554
crore. This is based on the potential assessed under various sectors and sub-sectors
in all agro climatic zones of the State,” informed NABARD Odisha chief KC
Panigrahi on Friday while speaking at the State Credit Seminar organised by the
NABARD.
The seminar was inaugurated by Chief Secretary Aditya Prasad
Padhi and attended by Development Commissioner-cum-Additional Chief Secretary R
Balkrishnan and Finance Secretary Tuhinikanta Pandey.
On the occasion Chief Secretary Padhi said credit is the
lifeblood of any sector and it is a dichotomy that the Cooperative Banks which
are surviving on oxygen and receive 3.5 percent of the total deposits are
providing most of the agricultural loans in the State.
“Nearly 70 per cent areas of the State are still uncovered by
bank branches. Basic banking services like appointment of Business
Correspondents should be done on a priority basis,” said Padhi.
