Vikaspedia portal launched for disseminating development information

Bhubaneswar: India Development Gateway (InDG), a national-level initiative, has launched a dedicated content portal, Vikaspedia, for providing information and knowledge products and services in the domain of social development.

The portal is like a wiki for different sectors and industries having a specific objective of reaching the ‘un-reached’ communities of India, especially the financially underprivileged ones. The content is targeted to provide knowledge to the people about various subjects, such as Agriculture, Health, Education, Social Welfare, Energy and e-Governance.

Vikaspedia is an online information guide launched by the Government of India. Vikaspedia Portal has been developed by Centre for Development of Advance Computing(C-DAC) for disseminating development of information focused towards social development and is run by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.

It is built as a portal for the social sectors, and offers information in 23 languages – English, Assamese, Telugu, Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil, Bodo, Dongri, Sanskrit, Kashmiri, Konkani, Nepali, Odia,Urdu, Maithili, Manipuri, Santali, Sindhi, Punjabi, and Marathi. It was started on February 18, 2014.

Vikaspedia is a multi-lingual one-stop knowledge portal that targets specific country needs for achieving inclusive social development. It emphasizes key areas of social development by providing responsive and credible information catering to the needs of underserved communities. The contents of Vikaspedia centres around six important thematic domains Agriculture, Health, Education, Energy, Social Welfare and e-Governance.

The ultimate goal is to create a service-oriented, people-friendly and demystified Information Technology (ICT) for Development in service of communities through country-wide collaborations.

The portal aims at creating a versatile collective knowledge repository with a specific focus on domains relevant to social and economic development. It will serve as a collaborative content creation, sharing and utilization platform for a rainbow of stakeholders – NGOs, government, community based organizations, knowledge networks, CSRs, spread across the country.

Life Academy of Vocational Studies (LAVS), Bhubaneswar has been identified as the State Nodal Agency (SNA) for content-development and dissemination of development information in Oriya language the state. The responsibility of the state nodal agency is to collect information on policies programmes, schemes, campaigns, progress, success stories and other noteworthy initiatives being undertaken by different development departments targeting human development.

With this mandate, LAVS has initiated campaigns by organizing workshops and orientation events at district and sub-district lever for wider outreach to stakeholders and their participation in the activities. The basic objectives of the workshops and other related events are to spread awareness about this initiative among line departments and other development actors and invite their proactive participation in promoting use of this platform for communication and dissemination of government policies, programmes and schemes for greater outreach and impact. Besides, it targets multiple partnerships with academia and other development actors for gathering information and quality dissemination
