Bhubaneswar: Odisha-based People’s Cultural Centre (PECUC), a leading voluntary organisation, was granted a Special Consultative Status by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) at its coordination and management meeting held recently.
The PECUC office here received a letter in this regard on Friday. The consultative status enables an organisation to actively engage with ECOSOC and its subsidiary bodies, as well as with the United Nations Secretariat, programmes, and agencies in a number of ways.
The consultative relationship with NGOs also enables the Council or one of its bodies to seek expert information or advice from organisations with special competence in a subject matter.
The PECUC works on a mission to empower and enable people especially children, women, the aged and others disadvantaged in society, to participate powerfully in their holistic development.
The PECUC has pioneered in the field of eradication of child labour in the country and rescued and rehabilitated 32,069 child labourers. PECUC has also been awarded with different awards and honours by different Government and non-Government organisations. Recently, it has been accepted as a member of Global Partnership to End Violence against Children.
