NTPC bid to empower girls

Angul: A total of 237 girls, aged between 10-12 years, successfully honed their skills at numerous activities such as yoga, sports, English learning, digital literacy, leadership and environment studies in the 28-day long workshop jointly organised by NTPC Talcher Kaniha and NTPC Talcher Thermal power plants here.

The residential workshop titled Girls’ Empowerment Mission (GEM) was conducted between May 20 and June 16 by the NTPC under its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative.

The workshop was implemented by the power stations through a specially designed curriculum in association with NGO ‘Barefoot College’, Rajasthan.

The participants selected from neighbouring 26 schools areas of the power stations were given various training starting from yoga, academics, dance, sports, arts, and English learning.

Since the workshop was for girls, gender sensitisation becomes vital. The workshop also came up with innovative initiatives to encourage developing leadership qualities.

Apart from the above activities, the participants had the opportunity to watch inspirational children movies at the township auditorium every week in the four-week long workshop to encourage their creativity.

After successful completion of the workshop, the girls will act as ambassadors of NTPC in sharing their experiences and learning from the workshop with outside world.
