Bhubaneswar: The opposition Congress party workers on Monday resorted to a unique by selling onions at Rs 40 per kilogram at Master Canteen Square here to protest against the unprecedented increase in prices of onion.
In the past few days, prices of onions have shot up to Rs 100 per kg in several parts of the State, including State capital Bhubaneswar. The Bhubaneswar organisational district unit of the party was selling the onion at what they called reasonable price.
“Rising price of vegetables, especially onion has affected the household budget in a big way across the State. However, the Central and State Governments have turned mute spectators,” said Bhubaneswar organisational district unit president Manas Choudhry.
The protestors demanded immediate proactive measures to check the rising price of the essential commodity.
“Under the BJP regime common people are the worst sufferers. Neither the Central Government willing to listen to the pleas of the common people nor taking measures to check the unprecedented increase in prices of onions. So we decided to buy onions and sell them at Rs 40 per kg to the people,” said one of the protestors.
A person is allowed to take 250 grams of onion by paying Rs 10.
