Bhubaneswar: Around 15,500 professionals, including 887 doctors and 12,652 engineers, are unemployed in Odisha, the State Government informed the Assembly on Saturday.
“A total of 15,279 professionals, including 887 doctors, 12,652 engineers, 1,706 MBA degree holders and 34 Mass Communication degree holders are unemployed in the State. They have registered their names with the Employment Directorate,” said Skill Development and Technical Education Minister Premananda Nayak in a written reply in the Legislative Assembly here.
In response to a question of Mohan Charan Majhi, the Minister further informed the House that unemployment rate stood at 7.1 per cent in the State of which 8.3 per cent was recorded in urban areas followed by 6.9 per cent in rural areas.
“Efforts are being taken to give them employments in different Government agencies through Odisha Public Service Commission (OPSC), Odisha Staff Selection Commission (OSSC) and Odisha Sub-Ordinate Staff Selection Commission (OSSSC),” said the Minister.
Notably, the unemployment rate in 2017-18 stood at 7.1 per cent in the State against the all India average of 6.1 per cent. In 2015-16, unemployment rate in the State was estimated at 3.8 per cent compared to national average of 3.7 per cent.
