Bhubaneswar, November 19: A large number activists
of the Navanirman Krushak Sanghathan, a farmers body fighting for the cause of
peasants in the State, on Thursday observed a Jail Bharo Andolan by organising a
protest rally in the capital city here protesting the poor treatment of the
Government to farmers and the arrest of seven farmer leaders for intercepting
the vehicle of Agriculture Minister Pradeep Maharhaty in Jagatsinghpur.
Slamming the Government for not extending support to
debt-ridden farmers who are being allegedly forced to commit suicide due to
crop loss after scanty rainfall, the activists marched towards the residence
the Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.
Police intercepted them midway and arrested the agitating
activists.
The Sangathan has been demanding due respect to
farmers, adequate compensation to the kin of the deceased farmers who have
committed suicide due to crop loss and loan burden.
