Study of disaster management in Odisha school curriculum

Bhubaneswar, October 29, 2017: Maintaining that the State has
plans to take concrete steps tackle natural disasters with focus on
strengthening early warning mechanism and school safety, Chief Minister Naveen
Patnaik on Sunday informed that School Safety Policy of 2016 as designed by the
National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) will be implemented in schools
across the State soon.
“School Safety Policy of 2016 as designed by the National
Disaster Management Authority will be implemented by School and Mass Education
Department soon,” said Patnaik, adding that the Government had also plans to
integrate youth power for disaster management.
Speaking at a function celebrating Disaster Preparedness Day
and National Day for Disaster Reduction at Bhubaneswar, the CM said the State
had moved far ahead from the days 1999 Super Cyclone and mismanagement of
natural disasters, and was now setting global benchmarks in its management.
He said the State had now plans to take concrete steps tackle
natural disasters with focus on strengthening early warning mechanism and
school safety.
OSDMA Managing Director and School and Mass Education
Department Pradipta Kumar Mohapatra said that the State would include disaster
management as a subject in school curriculum from next academic session as per
the guidelines of NDMA.
The Odisha State Disaster Management Authority has trained
the volunteers of NCC and NSS of colleges on disaster management skill.
The Odisha Disaster Preparedness Day and National Day for
Disaster Reduction is observed on October 29 every year to recollect the
devastation in the aftermath of the of Super Cyclone of 1999 and strengthen the
State’s resolve to prepare for any disaster that may take place in future.
On the occasion, the State remembers the men, women and
children who lost their lives in the Super Cycle and during other disasters.
The theme for Odisha Disaster Preparedness Day and National
Day for Disaster Reduction this year is Early Warning to Save Lives.
In order to generate public awareness and to expedite the
State’s preparedness for protecting human beings and animals, provision for
last mile connectivity with the facility of early warning towers has been taken
up at 122 locations all along the coast to disseminate cyclone/ tsunami warning
to the people.
OSDMA, due to its vision and commitment to quality, has
created an effective network of disaster infra-structures in the remotest parts
of the State.
A host of activities like mock drill, training of ODRAF,
capacity building of the workforce for rescue, relief, recovery, rehabilitation
and reconstruction have taken place as per the mandate of the Disaster
Management Act 2005.
As of now, construction of 879 shelter buildings, about
17,000 ODRP houses for Cyclone Phailin affected of Ganjam and Khordha
districts, 571 houses at R&R site at Bagpatia for sea inundation effected
people of Satabhaya in Kendrapara district, 243 shelter connectivity covering
390 km, 12 saline embankments covering 58 km and five go-downs have been taken
up.

Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Maheswar Mohanty,
Chief Secretary Aditya Prasad Padhi, and Special Relief Commissioner
#Bishnupada Sethi also graced the occasion.
