Bhubaneswar, January 10: President Droupadi Murmu on Friday highlighted the invaluable contributions of the Indian diaspora in advancing the nation’s cultural, economic, and social influence globally.

Addressing a large gathering of overseas Indians at the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas event at Janata Maidan in Bhubaneswar, the President urged the diaspora to play an active role in India’s mission to become a ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India) by the 100th anniversary of its independence in 2047.

Murmu welcomed the vibrant community of overseas Indians to what she referred to as “their Bharat Bhumi” and praised their achievements in various sectors worldwide. “You carry with you the best of our country—the values, ideals, and culture that make India unique,” she said, emphasizing that despite being physically distant, the bond between the diaspora and India remains unbreakable.

The President underlined the evolving significance of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, which she noted had grown beyond a mere celebration into a platform for constructive dialogue, collaboration, and strengthening the ties between India and its global community. She expressed confidence that the diaspora’s continued engagement would play a vital role in driving India’s progress toward its vision of becoming a developed nation.

Reflecting on India’s goals for 2047, Murmu explained that the journey toward a developed India could not be completed without the active participation of its diaspora. She encouraged the global community to leverage their unique perspectives and accomplishments to contribute to the nation’s growth. “Your presence across the globe gives you a unique vantage point, and your successes provide an opportunity to guide India’s future,” she said.

The President also praised the government’s ongoing initiatives to strengthen its ties with the Indian diaspora. She highlighted measures such as the simplification of consular services for Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and the digitization of processes for Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs). Murmu also referred to several government missions aimed at supporting distressed Indians abroad, including Operation Kaveri, Operation Ganga, and Operation Vande Bharat, emphasizing India’s commitment to being a pillar of support for its citizens worldwide.

Murmu particularly acknowledged the increasing influence of women, students, and youth in the global Indian community. She celebrated the achievements of Indian women who have broken barriers on the international stage and commended the dynamism and creativity of India’s youth. She expressed optimism that these young leaders would steer the nation toward a prosperous future.

Closing her address, the President reiterated India’s vision of creating a global ecosystem rooted in the ancient philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam—the idea that the world is one family. She spoke of a future where India balances economic progress with social justice and environmental sustainability, ensuring a bright and equitable future for coming generations.

“To build a Viksit Bharat, we must work together,” President Murmu concluded. “A nation that stands tall on the global stage, continuing to be a beacon of hope for the world.”

In a moment of special recognition, President Murmu extended her congratulations to Christine Kangaloo, President of Trinidad and Tobago, who was awarded the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman 2025 for her outstanding contributions to strengthening the India-Trinidad and Tobago relationship.
